NORFOLK -- The crew of a Norfolk-based submarine received a big honor on Monday.

USS Norfolk was presented with the prestigious Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy.

It's given each year to the ship or aviation squadron that showed the most improvement in the Battle Efficiency Competition, a contest that includes operational readiness, inspections and retention.

US Fleet Forces Command commander Adm. John C. Harvey, Jr. presented the award to Cmdr. Douglas Jordan and the crew in a 9:00 a.m. ceremony on Pier 3, Naval Station Norfolk.

In announcing the selection in July, CNO Adm. Gary Roughead said Norfolk earned this award because the crew "performed flawlessly during a uniquely challenging six-month deployment and registered significant improvement on a recent engineering examination."

USS Norfolk returned home from a regularly scheduled deployment on September 6.
