HAMPTON -- Many families opened their homes to service members who couldn't be with their families at Thanksgiving.
The Higgs family wouldn't have it any other way. It's the fifth year the family has been involved in the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia's Adopt-A-Service Person program.
"I've already warned them the family's loud," said Kim Higgs.
Sergio Guadarrama was happy to sit down with new-found friends.
"I've not seen a real house or cul-de-sac since August 17," he said.
It just wouldn't seem like Thanksgiving without new faces at the table. On this day, there were three single service members to spend the day with.
"It's always fun to have different people in the house, always got different stories they bring with them," said Higgs' son John Kneller.
The "adoption" program is more than two decades old and, for the second year in a row, Dunkin’ Donuts donated coffee and bakery items to the host families.
The USO is planning more holiday events in December, including the Operation Holiday Spirit event, which provides military families in need with gifts and food.
