SUFFOLK --A Suffolk man is being treated for rabies after being bitten by a fox.
64-year-old Larry Riddick lifted his bucket over the dumpster at his apartment complex when he was clawed by what he first thought was a cat.
He says the fox was so fast that all he could see was its red eyes, so he kept punching where he saw the flashes of red.
The animal then ran off away from the Nancy Drive complex.
Riddick says he and several neighbors say they've seen foxes in the area before.
No fox has been found in the area, city officials said, but residents are reminded to stay away from any wild animal because there's always the threat the animal could be rabid.
The Health Dept. says anyone who has been bitten by a strange animal should immediately report it.
The Va. Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says foxes which find food in a place over and over again will adapt and lose their fear of humans.
Wildlife officials advise anyone who comes in contact with a fox to make noise by clapping or hollering and make yourself appear big to get them to run off.
