VIRGINIA BEACH -- Gas prices are rising and that has made life worrisome for volunteers with Meals On Wheels.

"You know that 50 dollars, 45 dollars, 60 dollars some of them tell me is quite a bit of money to continue the process of delivering to their homebound,” said Tracie Miner, Director of Meals On Wheels for Virginia Beach.

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia has 20 vehicles that need to make about 150 stops each day to serve these meals on wheels.

"The problem is that when fuel reaches $3.50 a gallon then we begin to go over budget on what we have budgeted.  So I am about two pennies away from trouble," said John Skirven, CEO of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia.

Managers like Tracie Miner are also concerned.

"I am hearing it, and I am very nervous.  There's been a lot of no-shows.  And the no-shows are not that they don't care.  They're finding that they just don't have the money that week to put it in the gas tank," concluded Miner.

If you would like to volunteer for Meals on Wheels, contact the Virginia Beach location at 306-2721 or for Portsmouth, call 673-5025.
