CHESAPEAKE -- Police released the audio from 911 calls reporting a plane crash Monday in the Dismal Swamp.
There was one call from an FAA supervisor, and one from Chesapeake Regional Airport.
The plane went down Monday afternoon near Lake Drummond.
The two-seater plane was on a training flight when it came to rest in a tree near the northwest corner of Lake Drummond.
Two people were aboard the aircraft, but neither was seriously injured.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City to locate the crash site, which is in a heavily wooded area not accessible by ground.
A helicopter hoisted the two people to safety and they were transported to a hospital.
The airplane is a CZAW Sport Cruiser owned by Tidewater Flight Center which operates out of Chesapeake Regional Airport. The company provides flight training and aircraft rental.
Andrew Johnson, owner of Tidewater Flight Center, said the crash happened during a checkout flight, with a flight instructor on board and a trainee at the controls.
State police identified the pilot as 37-year-old Eric Musial of Virginia Beach.
According to a state police spokeswoman, the plane took off from Chesapeake Regional Airport and was doing basic maneuvers when it stalled and lost altitude. The pilot and instructor made corrections to pull the plane out of its spin but the aircraft hit some trees.
The plane is a Czech manufactured single-engine plane classified as a light sport aircraft.
