NORTHAMPTON COUNTY -- A collision on Route 13 South spilled thousands of pounds of frozen meat onto the roadway early Thursday.
A tractor-trailer and a box truck collided at Stone Road in Northampton Co. around 4:15 a.m.
Initially, authorities said the rig was loaded with 80,000 pounds of frozen chicken, but it's actually about 41,000 pounds of frozen pork, Va. Staet Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya told WVEC.com.
Anaya said the investigation shows the rig's driver was going north on Rt. 13 when he took the curve, jackknifed and went into the southbound lanes. The box truck driver hit the trailer part of the rig, splitting it in half, she explained.
The box truck driver was taken to Shore Memorial for treatment of non-life threatening injuries; the tractor-trailer drive, David Wade of Hampton, wasn't hurt. He has been charged with failure to maintain the lane of travel, Anaya stated.
The Va. Dept. of Transportation says crews are unloading the cargo from the rig and cleaning the roadway, so a detour will be in place most of the morning.
For southbound drivers, the detour will take you from Rt. 13 onto Route 625 to Route 618 then back onto Route 13 South.
