HAMPTON – Hampton Roads’ four members of Congress are enlisting the help of President Obama in securing national landmark status for Fort Monroe.

The Army is scheduled to leave the fort in September by order of the Federal Base Closure Commission.

Congressmen Rob Wittman, Scott Rigell, Bobby Scott and Randy Forbes have sent a letter to Obama for help.  In that letter they wrote, “A national conversation about the (Civil) War would be greatly enhanced with the incorporation of Fort Monroe into the National Park system.

Hampton Mayor Molly Ward is hoping this letter will help.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that the Congressmen have gotten together and sent a bi-partisan letter to the President that he recognize Fort Monroe and its stature in the nation’s history and create a national monument there,” Ward said.

This letter comes as we approach the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War.
