This week we enter into the last month of the summer, and wow… there have been big changes in the way we drive in July! I hope you all dealt well with the adjustment at the Downtown Tunnel. It was a big one, but fortunately, you’ve probably heard about alternate routes for long enough that you handled it nicely.
Traffic alert-wise, this week is milder (so far). But there are definitely some things you need to know before you head out the door.
Here are your major traffic alerts between Monday, July 28 and Sunday, August 3 (Note: Alerts with NEW!!! in front of them have been added since Monday):
NORFOLK/PORTSMOUTH: Don’t forget that the EASTBOUND tube of the Downtown Tunnel will be closed again this weekend, 8:00 PM Friday until 5:00 AM Monday. During that time, take one of the alternates routes sketch out in the image below. And don’t forget that Monday through Thursday of this week, ONE lane will be closed overnight at the eastbound tube from 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM (so you can still take the tunnel to get to Norfolk but expect delays).
Also, road work in the WESTBOUND tube is still going on. The westbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel will still be closed Monday through Thursday, 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning. No road work is scheduled on Friday or Saturday night. Sunday night, one lane will be closed in the tube 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning.
YORK COUNTY: Starting this week, paving will take place on Lakeside Drive between Yorkville Road and School Lane (as part of the Lakeside Drive Improvements Project). Work will take place each weekday from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM and on weekends from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM. Flaggers will direct traffic during the week, and weekend traffic will be detoured. Be cautious driving through the work zone!
CHESAPEAKE: Here’s a really important alert for folks! Dominion Boulevard at the Steel Bridge will SHUT DOWN in both directions overnight on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning for construction of formwork near the river (as part of the Dominion Boulevard Improvement Project). During that time, take George Washington Highway or the Route 168 Bypass as alternate routes!
Also, just a reminder… The Gilmerton Bridge is closed for road work Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning. During those times, the High Rise Bridge and Jordan Bridge are your best and closest alternate routes!
