CHARLES CITY -- An estimated 1200 people gathered at Berkeley Plantation in Charles City to watch as five bald eagles were released into the wild.

Three of the eagles were removed from their nest at Norfolk Botanical Garden after their mother was killed by an airplane in April.

One eagle fitted with a tracking transmitter had to be returned to a wildlife center after failing to gain altitude in two initial flights.

Biologists said the eagle was not injured but was probably stressed from being handled while the transmitter was attached and from the heat.
