Dear Roze:

I found an anonymous note on my desk criticizing me for the way I dress.  The note said the clothes I’ve been wearing are unprofessional and inappropriate for the workplace.  Specifically, this person, or maybe it’s more than one person, said I need to stop showing so much cleavage.  I can’t deny I’m pretty endowed on top, so I can’t help but wonder if this letter was given to me by some of the caddy women in my office that are jealous of my figure.  We’re having real hot weather right now, so I’m dressing as lightly as possible so I can stay as cool as possible.  I’m not trying to flirt or anything like that, and I don’t think I’m breaking our company’s dress code.  I wish the person or persons who wrote the note had enough guts to talk to me.  It’s obvious that whoever wrote it doesn’t have a spine since it was unsigned and typed so I wouldn’t be able to identify them.  If they had identified themselves, I don’t think I would feel as angry and irritated.  Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Clothing fit for hot weather:

 I cannot discern from your email as to whether or not you, too, think your clothing reveals your cleavage.  Regardless, there is no place for cleavage in the workplace.  Professional clothes exist that accommodate for hot weather without being inappropriately revealing.  Although I understand why you would like to know who has a problem with your wardrobe, I also understand why people at work are hesitant to address such issues directly.  Oftentimes, such remarks can be taken the wrong way.  I suggest you talk to someone in your company’s human resources department to determine if your clothing meets your organization’s dress code policies.

Dear Roze:

I’m interning for a PR firm this summer with the hopes of getting a job offer before or by the time I graduate in December.  I feel like the manager I report to is impressed with my work.  My issue is with the firm’s social activities.  Every week, they have some kind of event after the work day, and the interns are strongly encouraged to attend.  I’m not a big fan of these social events.  I prefer doing my own thing when the work day ends.  If I’m not hanging out with my friends, I just want to crash.  At these social events there’s a lot of small talk with people I don’t know or barely know.  I’m not real comfortable with that.  What do you think?  I think all that should matter is whether or not I’m doing a great job when it’s being decided if I should get a permanent job offer.

Although your work performance is critical to the evaluation of your internship, often times the social aspect of the job plays a significant role as well.  Developing relationships and making connections can have a tremendous impact on people’s perceptions of you.  The fact that the firm is having these events and interns are “strongly encouraged” to participate indicates that the firm’s management considers them important.  They may want to see how well you and the other interns mesh with everyone in the organization and the organization’s culture overall.  If you want a job offer from this company, immerse yourself in all of its activities so you can not only make the best impression possible, but so you can better assess if it is a good fit for you.  Best of luck!
