NORFOLK-Ships from around the world will be in Norfolk next month for OpSail 2012.

Thousands of Virginia students will know all about them by the time they arrive because they're part of the Adopt-a-Ship program.

More than 4,000 students from 66 schools and youth organizations have have spent a year learning about the War of 1812, studying their adopted ship and country and communicating with crewmembers.

Lauren Campsen, principal of Ocean View Elementary School in Norfolk, said "OpSail 2012 Virginia has provided wonderful learning opportunities! Our adopted ship, the ARC GLORIA from Colombia, has served as a springboard for the study of geography, culture, and writing. Additionally, the whole experience has enriched our maritime studies program.”

Coleman Place Elementary and Tidewater Park Elementary, both in Norfolk, are learning about a ship much closer to home -the Godspeed - which brought colonists to Jamestown.

At Jamestown High School in York Co., teacher Molly Sandling is working with the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society to create a historical guide to Colonial Williamsburg, which will be translated and shared with crew members of their adopted ship the HNoMS THOR HEYERDAHL from Norway.

Students at Kegotank Elementary on the Eastern Shore spoke with the crew of the CUAUHTEMOC, the Mexican Training Ship, via Skype and asked questions about daily life. Accomack County Public School Superintendent Bruce Benson commented, “What a powerful learning experience . . . this allows us to take what’s going on in the classroom, and connect it to the real world.”

The Adopt a Ship program culminates in early June at OpSail 2012 Virginia, when selected students will have the opportunity to greet their ships dockside in a welcome ceremony, take a private tour, and participate alongside their ship’s crew during the Parade of Cadets on Sunday, June 10th.
