NORFOLK -- If you enjoy gardening and have some free time this week, you can help beautify an open space in downtown Norfolk.

Today through Friday, May 25, volunteers are needed to plant at The Plot, a vacant 2-acre lot at Granby and Main streets.  Planting is from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Last weekend, volunteers laid cobblestones and painted signage at the park-style venue, which is using reclaimed materials to create a venue for live entertainment, vendors, public art and a basketball court.

"Whether we need volunteers this weekend will be dependent on what gets completed during the week," spokesperson Ari Durall told WVEC.com.

The Downtown Norfolk Council is giving the site a temporary makeover so it looks good in time for the big OpSail 2012, which will bring thousands of people to the region.

A hotel had been planned for the site but that project fell through.

To volunteer to help landscape the area, fill out the form.

If you have questions, call the Council's office at 623-1757.
