NORFOLK -- Volunteers are needed to help clean the bay.

The 26th annual Clean the Bay day is June 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at sites across Hampton Roads and the state.

Volunteers will go on foot and in boats to pick up litter and debris along the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams.

Officials say more than 6,000 people took part in the event last year and removed about 125,000 pounds of litter and debris.

“The Bay and its waterways work for us every single day, boosting our economy and quality of life,” said Tanner Council, CBF Clean the Bay Day coordinator. “Protecting and restoring the Bay requires everyone doing their share to reduce pollution. Clean the Bay Day is a great, practical way for individuals to give a few hours back and make a big difference.”
