NORFOLK-It's always a good time to give blood, but the severe weather has really cut down on donations.  The Hampton Roads Red Cross to cancel two days of blood drives this week because of the snow.

"Since the beginning of January, the Red Cross had had to cancel more than 600 blood drives because of winter storms and freezing temperatures. That means we lost nearly 20,000 blood and platelet donations," said spokeswoman Kristen Hatfield.

Now that the weather is warming up and the streets are clearing, many bloods drives are planned today through Sunday.  Officials hope you'll get out of the house this weekend and donate.

All blood types are needed, Hatfield added.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients, especially type O negative – the universal blood type.   Type O negative is called the universal blood type because it can be transfused to any patient who needs blood regardless of their own blood type. Type O negative blood is often used in emergency situations when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type, so donors with type O negative blood are encouraged to give regularly.
