Fundraiser will help RAMPS Across America get its 'Just Desserts"

NEWPORT NEWS-If you have a sweet tooth, consider buying a ticket to this weekend's RAMPS Across America fundraiser.

There will be hundreds of deserts, a silent auction, live entertainment and more at the 4th annual Just Desserts event.

RAMPS Across America builds complex ramps for disabled people who have nowhere else to turn. Each ramp costs about $1,600.00 to build and all of the work is done by local contractors, military and others who  volunteering their time and talent.

For many people, these ramps give the elderly and disabled the freedom to leave their homes without without being carried. The group says U.S. Census data shows nearly 266,000 people in Virginia who have a disability that impacts their ability to go outside the home. That represents 5.1% of the U.S. population and 4.7% of the Virginia population over the age of 16.

RAMPS Across America was founded by Judy Head, a double amputee who has faced the hundreds of hurdles that confront the disabled on a daily basis.  

The “Just Desserts” event is Saturday, August 3 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Warwick Forest Commons at 1004 Old Denbigh Blvd., next to Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News

Tickets are $15.00 per person or $25.00 per couple.
