NORFOLK -- The Salvation Army's is celebrating the opening of its new $40 million community center in Norfolk.
The building on more than eight acres of land on Ballentine Boulevard in the Broad Creek section was funded by a 1.5 billion gift from the late philanthropist and McDonald's heiress Mrs. Joan Kroc and donations from people and companies throughout Hampton Roads.
The 92,000-square-foot Kroc Center has an aquatics center and water slide, a fitness center, a theater and chapel, and classrooms. Officials say the center is expected to serve more than 10,000 members a year.
Money was approved in 2005 and a ceremonial groundbreaking was held in October 2011.
