NEWPORT NEWS - Christmas is the season of giving, to help those less fortunate than yourself, and there are many places to give: the Salvation Army, area foodbanks and other charities.
In Newport News, Councilwoman Sharon P. Scott and the Food Drive Committee are gearing up for the 12th Annual North District Holiday Food Drive Party on Saturday. The theme of this year's effort is "Take a Bite Out of Hunger."
To support the “Food Drive Party,” people are asked to bring non-perishable food item(s) or make a monetary donation December 14 at 10 a.m. at the Denbigh Community Center. Businesses and other entities can also support our efforts by conducting mini food drives and bringing the proceeds to the Denbigh Community Center or any other Drop Site locations, or making a monetary contribution.
The event will feature music from local musicians and performances from various ethnic groups. Entertainment will include praise dance presentations, children’s activities, R&B, blues, jazz, gospel, contemporary and much more.
The party to collect food is December 14th.
Distribution day is December 21 at 11 a.m. at the Denbigh Community Center.
In 2012, more than 730 families or individuals signed up to receive food.
“Most families who benefited from our efforts over the past years include the working poor, unemployed and persons who are on a fixed income,” Councilwoman Scott said. “These families are having difficultly making ends meet all year long.”
