NORFOLK -- The stormy winter weather in Hampton Roads forced the Red Cross to cancel nearly 1,500 blood drives.

They're trying to make up for lost time and hope you'll help this month, which is Red Cross month.

Blood and platelet donors are everyday heroes who help save lives and donors of all blood types are needed, said spokeswoman Kristin Hatfield.

Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Blood is used for premature infants, people battling cancer/leukemia, people with sickle cell anemia … the list goes on.  Platelets, which only last five days, are used most often in Hampton Roads for cancer and leukemia patients.

To make an appointment to donate platelets, call 757-623-4880 or go to the Red Cross Web site to find blood drives near you.
