NORFOLK - ABC13 is proud again this year to be part of an effort to keep your children safe.

Each year, hundreds of old and potentially dangerous child safety seats are taken out of cars and dropped off during the Child Safety Seat Round-up.

If the safety seat you have is eight years or older, bought from a yard/garage sale or thrift store or was involved in a crash, safety experts say you should get rid of it for safety's sake.

As an incentive, you can take your old or worn out seat (up to two per person) to any of the drop-off locations during the month of February and get a $5 reward.

Drop-off locations:
-Walmart Supercenters
-DMV Customer Service Centers in Hampton Roads
-AAA office in Newport News and Virginia Beach

At the end of February, the seats will be recycled so they don't end up in landfills.

Virginia law requires all children under the age of eight to be properly restrained in an approved Department of Transportation child restraint. The law applies to any driver, not just the parent or guardian, in any vehicle, on any highway in Virginia. Additionally, children ages eight through 17 must be properly restrained in a safety belt, while seated in any seating position in a vehicle.
