Crews begin demolition of ODU's Foreman Field

Old Dominion University is replacing Foreman Field with a new 21,000-seat stadium, which the school said should be ready in time for next season.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — After 82 years, Old Dominion University is saying goodbye to Foreman Field.

Over the weekend, the Monarchs played their final game on the field against VMI. But despite winning 77-to-14 in their final match, it was a bittersweet farewell for fans. They say the hardest part will be letting go of all that history.

"It's always been here, it's a landmark and look, we've been fortunate enough to be a part of it," said fan Chip Shubert.

"It just has a certain feeling about the stadium," added ODU fan Kent Morris. "You feel like you belong to something local, but something that has history and heritage behind it as well."

Even though Foreman Field will never be the same as it was, fans say there's a lot to look forward to.

"As it grows, we're looking forward to the expansion, the opportunity to make more of it but I can tell you, it's a special place," said Shubert. "It's a special place has a lot of magic here."

Fans won't have to wait too long. Video posted to Instagram Monday night shows demolition has already begun. Crews began by knocking down the old stadium seats.

A new, similarly-sized 21,000-seat stadium will be built in its place. It will have better seats, restrooms, and amenities.

School officials said construction should be complete just in time for next season's home opener against Norfolk State University, set for August 31.

Virginia Beach-based S.B. Ballard Construction Company is leading the project.
