Veterans compete in annual Army-Navy croquet game

An annual croquet match honors army and navy veterans at one Virginia Beach retirement community.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — The highlight of the Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay croquet season is the Army vs. Navy match.

It’s an annual event residents have taken part in for the last six years at the Virginia Beach retirement community.

“It’s advertised for weeks,” said competitor Betty Binford, a player for the Army team.

The match was played in September and includes some of our nation’s finest veterans.

Navy has won the last four meetings- something competitor Dick Binford is proud of. Binford plays for the Navy team, but he spent 30 years in the Air Force, an extension of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

“I feel he’s a turncoat a little bit,” said Betty Binford, jokingly. “I had to go play for army in his stead.”

Betty and Dick are married and met in the Air Force.

Betty is also the first woman to compete in the annual game.

“As you can see I don’t live through my husband,” said Betty Binford.

“I’m very proud of her,” said Dick Binford. “And it makes for a lot of fun at home.”

Navy won the match again this year, improving their overall tournament record to five and one.
