NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — Newport News police are investigating a stabbing that left a man dead.

The victim has been identified as 46-year-old Vincent George Attorelli of the 400 block of Bluebird Lane in Newport News.

Police received the call at 8:18 p.m. Monday, November 12. When they arrived on the scene outside a 7-Even in the 400 block of Oyster Point Road, they found Attorelli with at least one stab wound.

Medics pronounced the victim dead at 8:21 p.m.

Police are still investigating the incident and have not identified the victim.

Demetrius Starling lives behind the 7-Eleven gas station where the stabbing happened.

“I come here every day,” Starling said. “It's strange it happened here and it's sad that I’m so close to it.”

This is the 23rd homicide in the city. Police say there were 26 last year and 30 in 2016.

“People don't value life these days, it's sad,” Starling said.

Newport News police scheduled a community police support walk for Tuesday, November 13 at 3 p.m. where the event occurred.

The point of the walk is to show the community that the department supports them and is concerned about their safety. They specifically targeted businesses on Oyster Point Road.
