Suspect in custody following Franklin shooting

Before the shooting, police say the ex-boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman kicked in the door to her apartment, assaulted and strangled her -- and then assaulted her two kids.

FRANKLIN, Va. (WVEC) -- Officers responded to Dorchester Square Apartments in Franklin after multiple gunshots were reported around 3:53 a.m. Saturday.

Before the shooting, police said the ex-boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman, 23-year-old Trevoris Monte' Evans, kicked in the door to her apartment, assaulted and strangled her, and then assaulted her two kids.

The children are 1 and 2.

Franklin Police Captain T. W. Whitt said the woman called the children’s father who came to pick them up.

Whitt said that’s when Evans and the father went outside and multiple gunshots were fired.

"The father and the suspect left the apartment and went downstairs, and that's when the gunshots started going off," Whitt said.

"We have evidence that shows that there are at least four shooters involved in this.”

Police said a 30-year-old Southampton County man received a graze on his shoulder.

"They start spraying bullets and don't care where they go or who they hit," Whitt said.

"Just the whole incident itself is troubling, but just the lack of remorse, the lack of thought, the lack of caring for human life than that, that is astounding.”

Multiple warrants were issued for Evans' arrest, and Franklin Police on Tuesday said Evans had been taken into custody. He is currently being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

The investigation continues into identifying the other people involved in the shootout.
