VIRGINIA BEACH -- A runner in the Rock and Roll Half Marathon died Sunday morning.
Investigators say Sean McCarthy, 27, of Richmond collapsed near a medical tent toward the end of the race.
He died at the hospital.
Dr. Lewis Maharam, Elite Racing Medical Director, released this statement:
"At Sunday's half marathon, a race participant collapsed in front of medical personnel. The runner was immediately treated and transported to the hospital where the participant was pronounced dead. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We have spoken with the family and they have asked everyone to please respect their privacy during this difficult time."
According to investigators, McCarthy had no known medical problems.
An investigation continues.
