HAMPTON -- Hampton City Schools needs to hire dozens of school bus drivers for the new, yellow buses to carry middle and high school students.
School officials figured they could save about a million dollars by buying more buses and hiring more drivers rather than continuing with Hampton Roads Transit buses.
They say HRT wanted $4.1 million to provide the service for the upcoming school year.
Earlier this year, as a cost saving measure, the School Board decided totake care of all its transportation needs beginning this fall.
The buses being added to the fleet will arrive next month, but about 60 drivers are needed.
"There has been a lot of interest in the jobs," says David Benware, the director of transportation for Hampton Schools.
Bus drivers must go through two to three weeks of training, for the just under $11.00-an-hour jobs. They also must pass physical and criminal background checks.
Benware says a good bus driver must be able to pay attention to detail and love kids
