CHESAPEAKE -- The Chesapeake police officer who found himself at the wrong end of an AK-47 plans to return to the police force.

Rookie Officer Sean Fleming spoke on a Chesapeake cable program taped Thursday morning.

"It will take more than this to scare me away," said Fleming, who was shot five times on June 1 as he responded to a pursuit/abduction that ended on I-64 near George Washington Highway. "It's still undecided when I'll go back to work."

Fleming walked onto the set of "Thinking Out Loud" as the song "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters played in the background. Dressed in a black shirt and tie, he showed no physical signs of his injury.

It was his second interview since the shooting.

He broke his silence to 13News last Saturday at a car wash fundraiser, saying his recovery is going well. His personal Jeep was riddled by the gunfire in the shootout as he took cover behind the engine compartment. That fundraiser raised nearly $1,500 to help Fleming buy a new vehicle in case the city didn't cover it.

On Thursday, 13News was told by a police spokeswoman that the city has assessed damage to Officer Sean Fleming's Jeep Wrangler and will cover repairs.

The Chesapeake Commonwealth's Attorney is limiting what Fleming can discuss publicly because he's expected to testify against two suspects accused of attempting to kill him.

Fleming did not take reporters' questions today but read from a statement, thanking police, rescuers and the community for support.

The Deep Creek Ruritan Club will host a BBQ dinner fundraiser for Fleming on June 28 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the log cabin on George Washington Highway North, behind the fire station. For more information, call 757-487-4019.

Eight Firehouse Subs restaurants also are collecting donations for Officer Fleming at stores now through June 28.
