NORFOLK - The use of deadly force was "appropriate and justified" for three Portsmouth police officers who pursed a suspect into Norfolk, according to the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney.
On January 9, police say Kenji Danzy of Newport News wouldn't stop when Portsmouth police tried to pull him over for speeding and reckless driving. They say he drove through the Downtown Tunnel into Norfolk and onto a cul-de-sac on Westminster Avenue. Police say he then tried to drive away and struck a police car. Danzy maneuvered to get away and struck a Portsmouth officer with the bumper of his car.
According to investigators, Danzy then drove toward other officers who'd arrived to help.
Officer McAndrew fired two shots through the driver's side window. Officer Pearson fired one round and Officer Petty fired two rounds.
A witness confirms Danzy's car drove toward the officers before she heard gunshots, according to the Commonwealth's Attorney. An autopsy determined Danzy died from either two or three gunshots.
