NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- Liebherr Mining Equipment Co. has laid off 49 workers at its Newport News plant.
Liebherr attributed the layoffs of 44 full-time employees and five contract workers to a downturn in the mining industry. The company said Friday that the layoffs are permanent.
Liebherr spokeswoman Sabrina Soares says the company held off laying off workers for as long as it could.
The Newport News plant, at 4100 Chestnut Avenue, manufactures huge trucks used in mining operations around the world. The trucks stand nearly 25 feet tall and can transport up to 400 tons of material.
Liebherr is a division of Bulle, Switzerland-based Liebherr-International AG.
