NORFOLK -- A downtown Norfolk bar shut down last weekend during a surprise inspection is not expected to reopen.

The owner of the Indra Lounge at 251 Granby Street advised the city he will keep the bar closed while he attempts to sell it.

The Norfolk Bar Task Force, part of the fire marshal's office for about 10 years, closed down the business on Saturday.

Inspectors said the lounge exceeded its occupancy and had health code violations, among other citations.

According to the city Website, the Bar Task Force conducts unannounced sweeps of local bars and clubs to insure that they are not overcrowded, to enforce ABC laws and aren't violating the fire code.

The surprise inspection came just weeks after two downtown Norfolk shootings -- one on March 22 inside Waterside Parking Garage and the March 19 robbery/shooting on Bank Street. The victim, Brian Carter, 24, of Suffolk, later died.
